Depression is a very common mental disorder that affects around 350 million people worldwide. Depression can cause a number of issues that make it even harder for someone to live a normal happy life. Often time’s depression is normally treated by social therapy, antidepressant medications or a combination of both; this works for around 80% of people suffering from depression today. Another way to complement your treatment for depression is to eat a healthy diet. Studies have shown that a better diet can help in managing some symptoms of depression. Some great food choices may include:

  • Foods with Omega-3 fatty acids such salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts
  • Foods high in vitamin B12 and folate which include: whole grains, fish and dark leafy greens
  • Dark chocolate!!! (Due to its high number of antioxidants) but remember in moderation. One oz. is the recommended serving size. (has to be 72% cocoa and up in order to get the affect)
  • Good sources of protein such as lean meats, poultry and fish, as well as low fat dairy products and a variety of nuts and beans.
  • Whole grain and complex carbs. Stay away from instant processed carbohydrates (sugary cereals white bread or rice etc.) these carbs spike your insulin levels which can change the balance of serotonin distribution in your body causing mood swings. So stick with more complex carbs like brown rice, steel cut or rolled oats, whole grain breads etc.
  • More fruits and vegetables in moderation, the amount of fruits and vegetables can help stabilize your body without throwing it too far off balance due to the high number of antioxidants, so it is important to incorporate them into your diet as much as possible. (Since some fruits are high in sugar it may be advised to incorporate more veggies into your diet over fruits).
  • Drink low caffeinated or herbal tea, they have been shown to help treat depression due to their medicinal properties; some teas may include green, red raspberry leaf and chamomile tea are among many that help enhance brain function and calm the body.

A healthy diet has been shown to have great benefits for helping people combat depression along with their current treatment. There is no miracle diet to fight depression, but studies have shown that a natural, healthy diet can do wonders for anyone.
